ASD-North's STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math) leads are releasing a weekly STEAM Newsletter. Each week, students are given a new challenge and are encouraged to complete the related Math and Literacy activities. Please be sure to look at the grades 3-5 issue of the newsletter (2nd page).
Week of June 1st - June 5th
This week your science will be integrated with your writing. You will choose a topic that you are interested in and research it for your informational text.
Week of May 25th - May 29th
Build a Rube Goldberg Machine: This week you are tasked with building a Rube Goldberg Machine. These are SO COOL!!!! Click on the link below to learn more about Rube Goldberg, watch videos of Rube Goldberg Machine examples, and learn to make your own! Send me a video of your machine in action and I will post them on our Facebook page!

Day 4 and 5: Today and tomorrow you can explore the STEAM newsletter (link is at the top of the page) or work on building a model of the school. Mr Gorman has sent a video out asking students to create models of the school using using Lego, cardboard, maybe even milk cartons or you can draw a picture. Below is Mr. Gorman's video and a picture of the school.

Making Observations: In order to make accurate observations we use our 5 senses. We include lots of details like size, colour, texture, smell, taste, weight etc...

Day 4-5 Making Observations: Today you will be going on a rock hunt. Try to find 3 rocks from 3 different places.
Day 4: Write your observations about each spot you find your rock. What are the surroundings like? What is the soil like? What types of vegetation did you find near your rock? Day 5: Make your observations about each of your rock. What colour, texture, size (comparison), shape, etc... is your rock? |

Week of April 14th-17th
Science Skill: Classification
Classification is the act of arranging things in groups or categories according to an established criteria. We classify according to characteristics that are the same or different among objects or organisms to sequence and sort them.
Day 1: Activity: You will need a collection of items. This could be coins, buttons, rocks, shells... Having 20-40 items is ideal. First, sort them into 2 groups based on a chosen criteria. What was your criteria? Then, subdivide each group in two. What new way did you classify them? List some ways we can classify objects. Fill in the worksheet below. An example might be size (big/small).
